About this tool
Photos from a phone or camera carry hidden metadata. The most sensitive is the GPS location, which can pin down exactly where a picture was taken, but the file also stores the camera make and model, lens, exposure settings, software and timestamps. This tool reads all of that so you can see it, then strips it out before you share the image.
By default it removes everything. If you would rather keep some of it, for example keep the camera settings but drop the location, switch to "Choose what to remove" and untick what you want to keep. The choices offered match what the photo actually contains. It handles EXIF, XMP, IPTC and comment data in JPEGs, and text and embedded EXIF chunks in PNGs.
Everything runs on your device. The photo is never uploaded, and the cleaning only deletes the metadata sections of the file: the image itself is copied through untouched, so there is no re-compression and no loss of quality.
Frequently asked questions
- What is EXIF data and why remove it?
- EXIF is information your camera or phone embeds in a photo: the camera make and model, the exposure settings, the date and often the exact GPS location where the shot was taken. Removing it before you share or upload a photo stops that information, especially your location, from travelling with the file.
- Are my photos uploaded anywhere?
- No. The photo is read and cleaned entirely in your browser. Nothing about the image or its metadata is ever sent to a server.
- Does removing metadata change image quality?
- No. The tool deletes only the metadata sections of the file and leaves the actual image data and colour profile untouched, so there is no re-compression and no quality loss.
- Can I keep some data and remove only the location?
- Yes. The default removes everything, but you can switch to "Choose what to remove" and untick the parts you want to keep. The options shown depend on what the photo actually contains.
