About this tool
The four percentage questions everyone reaches for a calculator to answer, laid out as sentences: what is X% of Y, X is what percent of Y, the percent change between two numbers, and a price with a percentage taken off or added on. Type in any box and the answers update as you go; fractions like 1/3 work too.
The discount row shows both directions at once, because a 15% tip and a 15% discount are the same arithmetic with opposite signs. Percent change keeps its sign, so drops show as negative. Division by zero cases show a hint instead of pretending there is an answer. Everything computes locally in your browser.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between percent change and percentage points?
- Going from 10% to 15% is a rise of 5 percentage points, but a 50% change, since 15 is half again as much as 10. This page computes percent change; subtract the two numbers yourself for points.
- Why does "X is what percent of 0" have no answer?
- It would require dividing by zero. A share of nothing is undefined, so the calculator shows a hint instead of a misleading number.
- How is percent off different from percent of?
- 15% of 120 is 18. 120 with 15% off is 120 minus 18, which is 102. The last row computes both directions: discounts take the percentage away, tips and taxes add it on.
