About this tool
Enter any place on Earth and see when the sun and moon rise and set there, plus the three kinds of twilight, the golden hour, the length of the day and the current moon phase. Pick a city from the search box, type in exact latitude and longitude, or use your device location. You can check any date, not just today.
Every time is shown in the location’s own time zone, so a sunset in Tokyo reads in Tokyo time with no mental math. Civil twilight is the period when the sun is up to 6 degrees below the horizon and there is still usable light. Nautical twilight reaches 12 degrees, and astronomical twilight 18 degrees, after which the sky is dark enough for faint stars and deep sky objects. The golden hour, the soft warm light photographers like, sits just around sunrise and sunset.
The whole tool runs in your browser. The city list, the time zone lookup and the astronomy are all computed on your device, so nothing about where you are is ever uploaded. Times are computed with standard algorithms and are accurate to about a minute for most locations.
Frequently asked questions
- What is the difference between civil, nautical and astronomical twilight?
- They mark how far the sun is below the horizon. Civil twilight runs until the sun is 6 degrees down (you can still do most things outdoors). Nautical twilight goes to 12 degrees (the horizon at sea is still faintly visible). Astronomical twilight ends at 18 degrees, after which the sky is fully dark.
- Can I use exact GPS coordinates?
- Yes. Enter latitude and longitude directly, or tap "Use my location" to let your browser provide your position. You can also search for a city by name. Coordinates give the most precise sunrise and sunset.
- Are the times in my time zone or the location’s?
- The location’s. Sunset in Tokyo is shown in Tokyo time, so you do not have to do any conversion. The time zone in use is named above the results.
- Is my location sent to a server?
- No. The city list, the time zone lookup and all of the sun and moon math run in your browser. Nothing about where you are or what you search ever leaves your device.
- What is the full world list option?
- The search uses a built-in list of major cities by default. Turn on the full world list to search about 135,000 places worldwide, including smaller towns. It is a one-time download of a few megabytes that your browser then saves on your device, so later visits load it instantly with no further download. It is still just a static list, so your searches stay on your device.
