About this tool

Convert watts, kilowatts and megawatts to horsepower, metric horsepower (PS) and BTU per hour. Handy for comparing car specs across regions (US brochures quote hp, European ones PS or kW), sizing an air conditioner quoted in BTU/h, or translating a generator's rating.

The two horsepower flavors are the classic trap: mechanical hp is 745.7 W while metric PS is 735.5 W, close enough to confuse and far enough to matter in a spec sheet. Type a value, pick two units, and the result updates as you type, with the all-units table showing every equivalent at once. Everything runs locally in your browser.

Frequently asked questions

Why do car brochures show two horsepower numbers?
Mechanical horsepower (hp, 745.7 W) is the US convention; metric horsepower (PS, 735.5 W) is common in Europe and Japan. They differ by about 1.4%, so 100 hp is about 101.4 PS.
What is BTU per hour used for?
Heating and cooling capacity. Air conditioners and furnaces are rated in BTU/h in the US; 12,000 BTU/h is about 3.5 kW, the size of a typical window unit.
Is my input sent anywhere?
No. The conversion runs in your browser with plain JavaScript, so nothing is uploaded and it works offline once the page has loaded.
